11-year-old gives birth to child fathered by 14-year old brother

Delivery hospital, Spain

A girl aged 11 has given birth to her 14-year-old brother’s baby, London Evening Times has reported.

Police are investigating the birth and say the baby’s dad is the mum’s sibling and that he was 13 when he got her pregnant.

The girl gave birth at Virgen de la Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia, south-east Spain last Friday.

Local reports say that the family, originally from Bolivia, did not know the girl was pregnant and was admitted to hospital with “stomach pains”.

Shortly after the birth, hospital authorities alerted police and social services to investigate the circumstances of the pregnancy. Both mother and child are said to be “doing well”.

In 2013, Spain raised the age of consent from 13 to 16 but an exception is made if the sex is consensual when the boy is of similar age or stage of development and maturity. Because of the young age of the boy, charges are unlikely to be made unless the sex was non-consensual.

The Minister of Health of Murcia, Manuel Villegas, said the case was “exceptional”. DNA tests will be carried out on the baby to verify who the father is.

The new mom and the baby are "doing well."
