UCLA signs 9-year-old battling brain tumor to letter of intent

UCLA received a big addition to its 2016 recruiting class on Saturday.
Bruins Director of Player Personnel Patrick Girardi announced that 9-year-old Cade Spinello, a UCLA fan who’s been battling a brain tumor, has officially signed his letter of intent to join the program.

According to a story from ABC 7 in Los Angeles, Spinello had emergency surgery to remove a brain tumor in 2010. Spinello then suffered a massive stroke shortly thereafter. The stroke left Spinello legally blind, but that didn’t stop him from participating and scoring a touchdown in a UCLA practice in September.
In the scholarship offer given to Spinello, UCLA head coach Jim Mora wrote that Spinello’s practice performance left the coaching staff impressed.
“Ever since that practice our coaches and scouts have had their eyes on you and it’s time that we officially sign you to become a University of California, Los Angeles football player,” Mora wrote.

UCLA will sign the rest of its 2016 class when signing day rolls around on Wednesday
